HC Deb 08 February 1968 vol 758 cc623-4
3. Mr. Ellis

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the review of grants to British students who are studying abroad; and what action he will take.

Mr. Gordon Walker

No change will be made in the rate of grant to under- graduates studying abroad until the revised rates for all students come into effect next September.

Mr. Ellis

May I press upon my right hon. Friend the fact that since devaluation people living on small budgets overseas have been affected adversely? I understood that his Department was doing a review study on this; is that review now discontinued? Will my right hon. Friend look at this again?

Mr. Walker

The review we were doing was in regard to post-graduates. This we have completed. There are very few of them. They are in a special position and we have somewhat increased their grants. There is not yet any considerable evidence of hardship. I cannot anticipate the review we have to make in any case in September.
