HC Deb 12 December 1968 vol 775 cc551-2
2. Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects to be able to make a statement about the future use of Holloway Prison.

Mr. Callaghan

I hope to make a statement early next week.

Mrs. Short

I thank my right hon. Friend for that illuminating Answer. Is he aware that many of us are very concerned about the general treatment of women offenders and that if he could close Holloway that would be a great step forward?

Mr. Callaghan

I shall hope to put Holloway Prison in a wider context; namely, I would like to be able to produce a comprehensive plan for the reshaping of the system of female penal establishments in England and Wales. I hope that my hon. Friend will find that reply satisfactory.
