§ 39. Mr. Allasonasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will make an order under the Civil Aviation Act, 1968, for consultation with local interests at Luton Airport.
§ Mr. William RodgersI would refer the hon. Member to the Answer which I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Luton (Mr. Howie) on 21st November.—[Vol. 773, c. 322.]
§ Mr. AllasonAs that reply only told us that Luton was one of a number of places being considered, will the hon. Gentleman tell us whether he needs further representations to ensure that he 423 gives favourable consideration to this plea?
§ Mr. RodgersNo further representations are required to ensure that a decision is made with regard to Luton. We shall make a decision as soon as possible, but before making a decision it is right that we should have consultations with the owners, both municipal and private.
§ Mr. Gwilym RobertsBut will not my hon. Friend accept that tens of thousands of people in the area are already affected by aircraft-noise, and as tens of thousands more will be affected if the airport is extended, does he not agree that this matter is of the utmost urgency?
§ Mr. RodgersI entirely agree that noise at Luton and elsewhere is a real social problem and that we must do all we can to alleviate it. For that reason, we are very anxious indeed to see these consultative committees, which will enable those most affected to express their point of view.
§ Mr. HowieOn a point of order, Mr. Speaker. Since the whole of Luton airport lies in my constituency—
§ Mr. SpeakerOrder. Supplementary question—Mr. Howie.
§ Mr. HowieI am deeply grateful to you, Mr. Speaker. When my hon. Friend says "as soon as possible," or words to that effect, will he try to make sure that his definition of "soon" is at least as agreeable to me and my constituents as it is to him, his Department, and the Luton Borough Council?
§ Mr. RodgersMy hon. Friend is hard to please, such a determined advocate is he for his constituency, but he will be very glad to know that we hope to do this early in the new year.
