HC Deb 10 April 1968 vol 762 cc1368-9
39. Mr. Lawson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland to what extent action and facilities in existence or in course of preparation, have as their objective the reduction of tendencies towards crime among young people and the social regeneration of those young people already convicted of crime.

Mr. Millan

The importance of encouraging young people to develop constructive interests as a way of counteracting tendencies towards crime is fully recognised by all concerned with the increasing provision of recreation and further educational facilities. Social work both in the family and in the community will be facilitated by the integration of the social work services proposed by the Social Work (Scotland) Bill.

Mr. Lawson

Will my hon. Friend look closely into the excellent work that is being done by the Chief Constable of Lanarkshire and some of his associates in fostering excellent relations between young people and the police in the county? Having done that, will he spread the information elsewhere?

Mr. Millan

I am to some extent already aware of that work and I certainly agree that anything of that nature that can be done is extremely helpful.
