HC Deb 30 November 1967 vol 755 cc628-9
26. Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why he has given a direction that boarders at grammar school should pay 2s. 9d. for their mid-day meal when day boys are only asked to pay 1s.

Mr. Denis Howell

My right hon. Friend has given no such direction. Local education authorities have discretion to fix the scale of fees payable by boarders at maintained schools and these fees would normally cover the full cost of boarding.

Mr. Digby

Are we to understand, then, that the governors have been misinformed and that the local education authority can deal with this as it wishes?

Mr. Howell

Local authorities are completely autonomous in this matter, and if tie governors of this school have been informed otherwise, that is, of course, inaccurate.
