§ 44. Mr. G. Campbellasked the Minister of Public Building and Works whether there is to be any reduction in building, or postponement of work sponsored by his Department in Scotland as a result of the measures connected with devaluation; and when those will be announced.
§ Mr. MellishThere will be some reduction in planned expenditure on buildings for the Service Departments, but the effect on Scotland is likely to be small. The Ministry's civil programmes are now being reviewed but I cannot as yet say what the effect will be on Scotland.
§ Mr. CampbellIn this review, will the Government particularly bear in mind unemployment in Scotland during the coming winter, which the Prime Minister has described as likely to be grim?
§ Mr. MellishYes, but the review has nothing to do with the coming winter in that already for the coming winter my Ministry alone has given £500,000 extra work in Scotland on maintenance over and above that already allotted. Greater effort has been made in the development areas and Scotland as a whole than ever before.
