Bromley-Davenportasked the Minister of Public Building and Works whether he is aware that black smoke and dirt is frequently emitted from the chimneys of Nevill House and Abel House, Ministry of Public Building and Works; what representations have been made in respect of this by those responsible in the area for enforcing the provisions of the Clean Air Act, 1956; and what steps he proposes to take to mitigate this nuisance.

On two occasions only have the appropriate authorities made representations. We are reviewing our maintenance arrangements and installing special smoke recorders.
§ Sir W. Bromley-DavenportIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that this dirt and smoke has involved residents in the area in considerable expense—for example, expensive redecorations—and that there is the question of damage to health? Can this nuisance be stopped forthwith? Why should Government Departments be above the law? Should not they set an example to others?
§ Mr. MellishIn fact, we conform to the Clean Air Act. I apologise to the hon. and gallant Gentleman for any trouble that may have been caused in the district. I assure him that we are making arrangements as best we can to see that this does not happen again.
