§ 15. Mr. Biffenasked the Postmaster-General why the general public were not informed of the Post Office's decision to accept cheques validated by bankers card for the purchase of stamps; what representations have been received concerning this lack of information; what action has been taken; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Edward ShortAlthough there has been very little public complaint of lack of information, I am not satisfied that adequate publicity was given to this at the outset. A leaflet has now been issued, and I am sending a copy to the hon. Member. I am also considering whether further publicity would be useful. Perhaps I could make it clear that cheques for up to £30, supported by a banker's card, are accepted not only for the purchase of stamps but for any transaction.
§ Mr. BiffenIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that the information leading to this Question was drawn from the Post Office Annual Report? As it displays a rather frightening degree of commercial ineptitude, can he say whether any disciplinary action has been taken against the officials involved?
§ Mr. ShortOf course there has been no disciplinary action. It is a question of holding the balance—Question No. 1 complained of too much publicity.
