§ 19. Mr. Hastingsasked the Minister of Technology when he intends to place a contract for a British variable geometry aircraft.
§ Mr. StonehouseContracts have been let to United Kingdom contractors for a short term project study of a United Kingdom variable geometry combat aircraft.
§ Mr. HastingsWhile thanking the Minister for that welcome news, may I 205 ask if he does not agree that the present B.A.C. design for V.G. is suitable for a general European requirement and that we simply cannot afford to fall behind in this technology, and that if we do not go ahead somebody else undoubtedly will?
§ Mr. StonehouseI agree with the idea that collaborative agreement with other European countries is extremely attractive, and we hope that will result in negotiations we are now having with the Germans and Italians.
§ Mr. Raphael TuckMay I ask why, if the Government are proceeding with this project, they are also buying the F111, to which the Americans themselves have very strong objections and which they do not like?
§ Mr. StonehouseAs my hon. Friend knows, this is a question for the Secretary of State for Defence.
