HC Deb 14 November 1967 vol 754 c200
14. Dr. David Kerr

asked the Minister of Technology what studies have been made of the use of vertical take off and landing and short take off and landing aircraft for passenger and cargo intercity transport.

Mr. Stonehouse

This complex problem is being studied by the Department in consultation with other Departments concerned, the aircraft industry, airlines and other interested bodies. Current studies include questions of suitable aircraft and engine designs, their associated economic and noise factors, travel patterns and location of suitable airports.

Dr. Kerr

While thanking my hon. Friend for that reply, may I ask if he can say whether there are comparable studies going on about the cost-effectiveness of the other forms of European intercity transport, particularly those with export potential?

Mr. Stonehouse

Yes, we have now a group engaged on the job of discussing the cost-effectiveness of these forms of transport, and certainly bearing in mind the exportability of any projects which may be designed.
