HC Deb 07 November 1967 vol 753 cc805-6
1. Sir J. Eden

asked the Minister of Power if he will make a statement about the effect on steelmakers outside the nationalised sector of the reduction in the price of pig iron.

The Minister of Power (Mr. Richard Marsh)

The British Steel Corporation has reduced pig iron prices in an effort to stop the decline over the last few months in their market share. The Corporation's action will increase pressure on the sales and prices of the private sector producers.

Sir J. Eden

Is not this likely to have an adverse effect on the private sector, particularly, for example, on companies such as the Millom Hematite Iron Ore Company? Might not there be some danger that the price-fixing arrangements which the Minister is pursuing would drive these companies out of business?

Mr. Marsh

I always understood that hon. Members opposite were in favour of the Corporation operating as a commercial concern. It has taken a commercial decision. If the private sector companies consider that this is unfair trading, they have the right to make formal complaint under the Act.
