HC Deb 07 November 1967 vol 753 c814
12. Mr. Gardner

asked the Minister of Power if he will review the operation of the consumer consultative councils associated with the electricity and gas industries.

Mr. Freeson

The operation of these councils is kept under review through the meetings which I hold each year with the council chairmen. We are not at present contemplating any change in these arrangements.

Mr. Gardner

Would my hon. Friend agree that after twenty years of operation it is time we had a look at this machinery? Is he aware that the vast majority of the members of the general public have never even heard of the councils, and would he at least in the meantime do something to publicise their activities?

Mr. Freeson

On the first point, I certainly accept the point made by my hon. Friend, and, indeed, the Consumer Council has recently carried out a survey of the consultative council machinery. The council's report is expected before not very long, and we shall certainly take into account any points which it may wish to make to us. Meanwhile, we are trying to increase publicity for the work of the consultative councils.
