HC Deb 09 May 1967 vol 746 cc1269-70
9. Mr. Eadie

asked the Minister of Power what tonnage of large coal suitable for domestic consumption is planned to be produced in Scotland in 1967.

Mr. Freeson

Planning the output of particular coals from each of the coalfields is a matter for the National Coal Board; I have asked the Chairman to write to my hon. Friend.

Mr. Eadie

Is my hon. Friend aware that if a pit closure policy is carried out in future there will be a substantial reduction in the production of large coal? Therefore, in the interests of the consumer, would my hon. Friend undertake to look into this matter?

Mr. Freeson

I understand that the National Coal Board expects to have sufficient large coal available in Scotland to meet normal demand, but, as I have indicated, I have asked the Chairman to write to my hon. Friend. If there are matters to be pursued following that, we shall consider any further representations made.

Mr. Emrys Hughes

Is it not a fact that output per man in Scotland has considerably increased, thus setting a good example to many private industries?

Mr. Freeson

It is perfectly true that productivity in the coalfields in Scotland has improved immensely in recent years, and we hope that it will bear fruit in the near future.
