HC Deb 09 May 1967 vol 746 cc1279-80
Sir Harmar Nicholls

On a point of order, Mr. Speaker. Is it in order for the prime Minister, as I think, to mislead the House? Replying to a supplementary question by my right hon. and learned Friend the Member for Hertfordshire, East (Sir D. Walker-Smith), the Prime Minister referred him to the speech made by the Lord Chancellor in another place yesterday. In the OFFICIAL REPORT I find this reference which, I think, means that the House has been misled. The Lord Chancellor said: Perhaps I should explain here two difficulties which our lawyers have had. First, the Treaties and the Community laws are … published in French, German, Dutch and Italian. There is not even … an authorised English version of the Treaty of Rome."— [OFFICIAL REPORT, House of Lords, 8th May, 1967; Vol. 282, c. 1201.] In those circumstances, is it fair to refer my right hon. and learned Friend to someone who says that it is published in a language that is not ours?

Mr. Speaker

I cannot comment on the fairness or unfairness of either side. This is a political point which could be made in the debate, which the hon. Member for Peterborough (Sir Harmar Nicholls) is at the moment preventing us from resuming.
