§ 2. Mr. Molloyasked the Minister of Overseas Development what form educational aid to developing countries takes; and if he will make a statement.
§ The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Overseas Development (Mr. Albert E. Oram)Educational aid to developing countries comprises grants under Colonial Development and Welfare schemes and Commonwealth grants, the supply of teachers, the training of overseas personnel in Britain, provision of equipment, the low priced books scheme and schemes of Commonwealth education co-operation. Aid under these heads amounts to about £18 million a year. For more details my hon. Friend should see our recent White Paper, Cmnd. 3180.
§ Mr. MolloyI appreciate my hon. Friend's Answer and realise how important it is, but can he say whether he intends to make any announcement at the next Commonwealth Educational Conference as to what further aid he might be giving in this connection?
§ Mr. OramThe fourth Commonwealth Educational Conference is due to be held in Lagos in November this year, and that will provide an opportunity for consultation on these matters with other Commonwealth countries. We are at the moment discussing within the Ministry what form Britain's future help in this important sphere can take.
