HC Deb 16 March 1967 vol 743 cc708-9
Q3. Mr. Heffer

asked the Prime Minister what discussion he has had with Mr. Rapacki, the Polish Foreign Minister, during his recent visit; and if he will make a statement regarding the issues discussed.

The Prime Minister

Mr. Rapacki and I had a very full and useful discussion on a number of important questions. The details of my talk and of those conducted by my right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary are confidential.

Mr. Heffer

Would my right hon. Friend indicate how far the idea of a European security conference was explored? Was the Gomulka plan for reducing nuclear weapons and then gradual disarmament considered, or was the Gaitskell-Rapacki plan discussed, which I understand is still Labour Party policy?

The Prime Minister

I think that my hon. Friend could naturally assume from the reference to the question of a European security conference in the communiqué signed by Mr. Kosygin and myself that this would be a subject for discussion. On the other question, as always in talks with Mr. Rapacki, all aspects of European security, non-proliferation, disengagement and everything which comes within my hon. Friend's Question naturally would have been discussed by my right hon. Friend. In my own case, to which the Question refers, the discussion was mainly about Vietnam.
