31. Sir E. Errington

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many rent officers have been appointed in each county and county borough; what was the date of each appointment; and how many cases were dealt with by each rent officer between appointment and 31st January, 1967.

Mr. MacColl

Altogether, 222 full-time and 114 part-time rent officers have been appointed in England and they had determined 24,154 applications for registration of rent up to 28th January, 1967. I will, with permission, circulate the detailed figures in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Does the hon. Gentleman realise that, in some cases, this is totally inadequate to deal with the situation, while in others there is not enough work? Will he try to persuade his right hon. Friend to do something about it?

As I said about rent assessment committees, my right hon. Friend is keeping watch all the time to see how we can best speed up the decisions.

Mr. Lubbock

Does the hon. Gentleman agree that his answers to this and the previous Question show that the burden of work on both rent officers and rent assessment committees is far less than the Government had anticipated? In view of this fact, would he now consider
