HC Deb 09 March 1967 vol 742 cc1733-4
12. Mr. Arthur Davidson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will hold an inquiry into the growing practice of private firms and individuals selling introductions selected by computer, in view of the dangers to young people.

Miss Bacon

While my right hon. Friend intends to watch this development, he does not consider that there is occasion for an inquiry at present.

Mr. Davidson

Is the Minister aware that thousands of these forms are being distributed in various parts of London and elsewhere? Is she also aware that not only are the public being asked to part with money, but they are also being asked to part with information of a particularly personal nature? Does she not think that the public should be alerted to the dangers of fly-by-night operators who could use that information?

Miss Bacon

I recognise that there is a problem with these organisations which call themselves variously "Operation Matchmaker", "Confidential Dating" and "Cupid". It is too early yet to say what might come of this development, but there are, of course, obvious dangers of abuse which will need to be watched.
