HC Deb 09 March 1967 vol 742 c1741
25. Mr. John Wells

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what instructions have been given to the Metropolitan Police in respect of gypsies and other travellers in the Metropolitan Police area; and when a census of such travellers was last made by the police.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Dick Taverne)

No general instructions have been given. The police helped in a census conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government on 22nd March, 1965.

Mr. Wells

Will the Home Office take reasonable steps to see that the Metropolitan Police conform to the standard of good conduct of the adjacent counties of London where these county councils and county police forces are doing all that they can to help these travellers in resettlement? Will he ensure that adequate provision is made within the Metropolitan Police area?

Mr. Taverne

We will see that adequate provision is made in the Metropolitan Police area. I am not sure what particular instance the hon. Member has in mind.
