§ 20. Mr. John Hallasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if the National Institute of Economic and Social Research has yet completed its study of the effect of the large-scale inflow of immigrants on Great Britain's balance of payments.
§ Mr. CallaghanI understand that the National Institute expects to report in about 12 months.
§ Mr. HallWould not the right hon. Gentleman agree that that is a rather long time to wait? Would he not further agree that this is a very important problem, particularly in view of his reply to me on 22nd November, in which he accepted that problems were involved arising from the effect of this on our balance of payments?
§ Mr. CallaghanThe National Institute has told me that it is undertaking a very deep-ranging study which will cover the general economic effects as well as the specific balance of payments effects of immigration.
