HC Deb 06 March 1967 vol 742 cc1035-6
32. Mr. Dean

asked the Minister of Social Security what effects British memship of the European Economic Community would have upon the United Kingdom's National Insurance and Industrial Injuries scheme.

Miss Herbison

The only immediately likely effect which I can foresee at present would be that the Regulations of the Community on social security for migrant workers would take the place of the reciprocal agreements which are in force between the United Kingdom and the members of the Community.

Mr. Dean

I thank the right hon. Lady for that information. In the review of the scheme which is now taking place, is she bearing in mind the desirability of harmonising our arrangements with those of the European countries in the event of our joining the Common Market?

Miss Herbison

All these things have to be taken into account. The hon. Member may know that the Treaty of Rome has no compulsory provisions which would affect our social security arrangements, but, of course, the aim is harmonisation.
