asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT a table showing, for each of the last 10 years, the number of Administrative Class Civil Servants recruited to the Treasury and Diplomatic Service, respectively, from Oxford and Cambridge, and from other universities.

Can my right hon. Friend now say whether the trend away from the undue proportion of Oxford and Cambridge graduates and towards a better and fairer proportion of graduates from the civic universities is satisfactory to the Government, and in view of the fact that the performance both at home and abroad has not exactly glittered during the last ten years, may not part of the solution to the problem lie in the terms in which the Question is posed?
