HC Deb 27 July 1967 vol 751 cc950-1
12. Mr. Leslie Huckfield

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what measures and detail of consultations have been held with the trade union movement and with industry in connection with the raising of the school leaving age; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

Both sides of industry approved of the raising of the school leaving age, which was first announced in January, 1964, and they so informed the Government of the day. Both the T.U.C. and the C.B.I. are associated with studies relating to the curriculum for the extra year at school.

Mr. Huckfield

As the school leaving age is to be raised very soon, as promised, and will involve several excursions into industrial premises, is it not about time that further consultations were held?

Mr. Roberts

Both sides of industry are now being consulted and I should be glad to hear any further suggestions which my hon. Friend might have. I have a long list of those consultations which are now proceeding and, if he would like further information, I would be glad to send it to him.
