HC Deb 27 July 1967 vol 751 cc969-70
Q7. Mr. Hamling

asked the Prime Minister what representations have been made to him about the future policy of Her Majesty's Government in relation to the development of atomic weapons; and whether he will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

The Government receive many approaches from all shades of opinion on this subject. As I made clear on 13th June in reply to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Croydon, South (Mr. Winnick), we are not intending to embark on a new generation of nuclear weapons.—[Vol. 748, c. 299.]

Mr. Hamling

I thank my right hon. Friend for the latter part of his reply, but has his attention been drawn to the Amendment on the Order Paper? Will he take it from me—[HON. MEMBERS: "Oh."]—that there are some on this side who, while not wholly supporting it—[Interruption.]

Mr. Speaker

Order. It is not out of Order for the Prime Minister to take something from a back bencher. Mr. Hamling.

Mr. Hamling

I have finished, Sir.

The Prime Minister

There are, I understand, two Amendments on the Order Paper. My hon. Friend did not make it quite clear which of them he did not wholly support. In either case, it is probable that we shall be debating this whole question of defence, and possibly at least one of the Amendments. I am hoping to catch your eye, Mr. Speaker, later in the day, and will hope to deal with any points raised.

Mr. Speaker

No promises.
