HC Deb 27 July 1967 vol 751 c962
28. Mr. Judd

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the estimated number of coloured teachers at present serving in schools throughout England and Wales.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

I do not have this information.

Mr. Judd

Would not my hon. Friend agree that the employment of these people is one of the best ways of promoting interracial understanding and that the opportunities should be increased in every possible way? Will the Department do everything possible to encourage recruitment in this respect?

Mr. Roberts

Certainly, but certain difficulties arise. In particular, immigrant teachers sometimes do not have a sufficient command of English or are not familiar with modern teaching methods. We have sponsored four four-term courses which are intended to help these teachers to overcome these difficulties.
