§ 11. Mr. Eadieasked the President of the Board of Trade how far he took into account the anticipated contraction of coalmining in Midlothian before he announced plans for the latest advance factories in Scotland.
§ Mr. DarlingIn drawing up the latest programme of advance factories for Scotland, my right hon. Friend took into account all the circumstances of the development areas, including the need to build factories quickly to provide opportunities for employment where these were most needed.
§ Mr. EadieIs my right hon. Friend aware of the announcement made by the Minister of Power last night? Is he further aware that it will have a rather ominous ring for some miners in Midlothian? Was there consultation between his Department and the Ministry of Power on this? Has my right hon. Friend any point to put to the House on the matter?
§ Mr. DarlingThere was consultation. We have a pretty good idea what the situation will be following the further mine closures coming along, and I can assure my hon. Friend that we will do all that we can to get new industry into the area. He will be aware that the Midlothian Council is itself arranging to build an advance factory on the Newbatile Estate.
