HC Deb 20 December 1967 vol 756 cc1252-3
32. Mr. Dempsey

asked the Minister of Transport when she proposes to introduce legislation to enable contributions to be made in order to provide concessionary fares to retirement pensioners during off-peak hours; and if she will make a statement.

80. Mr. Adam Hunter

asked the Minister of Transport when she will introduce legislation to allow retired people the facility of cheap fares in localities where there is no municipal transport operating.

Mr. Swingler

As my hon. Friends will now know, my right hon. Friend has included in the Transport Bill provisions to enable local authorities to arrange these concessions on non-municipal buses as well as municipal ones. The provisions will also cover concessions on the services of the Passenger Transport Authorities when these are set up.

Mr. Dempsey

Will my hon. Friend accept that pensioners in non-municipal areas will welcome that announcement and hope that great urgency will be applied to the problem of promoting the legislation to give them the same concession as pensioners in the municipal areas?

Mr, Swingler

I thank my hon. Friend very much. I hope that he will help us with great urgency in getting the Bill through.
