HC Deb 20 December 1967 vol 756 c1239
37. Mr. Goodhew

asked the Minister of Transport whether she will now authorise the installation of street lighting at the junction of Colney Heath Lane and Smallford Lane with the A405 North Orbital Road.

Mr. Carmichael

As the hon. Member knows, we are unable, at the moment, to approve the lighting scheme. Work on the road improvement scheme began on 28th September.

Mr. Goodhew

Is not the Minister aware that this dangerous crossing is being improved at a cost of £90,000 and that a mere £4,000 to improve the lighting so as to give adequate warning to motorists would be very well spent?

Mr. Carmichael

As the hon. Member knows, funds for lighting are limited and must be allocated to the worst danger spots. The provision of dual carriageways and a pedestrian bridge will improve the safety and, thereby, reduce the justification for lighting.
