HC Deb 20 December 1967 vol 756 c1245
15. Mr. Tapsell

asked the Minister of Transport what salary is to be offered to the Chairman of the National Freight Corporation.

Mrs. Castle

It would be premature to determine this now.

Mr. Tapsell

In view of the humiliating experience of the right hon. Lady when she had to hawk the job of Chairman of British Railways all round industry and the City, would it not be wiser in advance to announce the salary which she will pay so that she can get someone of the necessary calibre?

Mrs. Castle

I can assure the hon. Member that far from my having to hawk the job of Chairman of British Railways about, there are a very large number of people who would have been very interested indeed to accept that challenge, and we shall find that the same thing happens in relation to the National Freight Corporation.
