asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the newly formed Royal Marines/Royal Navy Dependants' Fund.

36. Mr. Buchanan

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force intend to introduce schemes similar to the Soldiers' Widows' Fund.

Mr. Foley

Two new funds, the Royal Marines/Royal Navy Dependants' Fund and the Royal Air Force Dependants' Fund, were established this year. In the event of death, they provide for a substantial and immediate grant to be paid to dependants. Members of the funds pay a small subscription. Neither of the funds is in any way financed from public money.

The funds have already demonstrated their usefulness, and the rapidly increasing membership shows that this is widely recognised.
