HC Deb 13 December 1967 vol 756 cc421-2
40. Sir E. Errington

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is being planned for the future of the British Indian Ocean Territories by his Department; and if he will make a statement as to the future of these islands.

Mr. Mason

The British Indian Ocean Territory remains available for the construction of defence facilities by the British and United States Governments, which is the purpose for which it was set up. There are no firm plans at present for such facilities.

Sir E. Errington

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that in Mahé the Government have provided £6 million to £7 million for the construction of an airstrip? In those circumstances does he propose, in order to limit his commitment, to use that airstrip for defence purposes?

Mr. Mason

I am not aware of that proposal.

Sir E. Errington

The hon. Member ought to be.

Mr. Dalyell

If there are to be further plans could they be in the nature of helping the Royal Society to set up a modestly priced scientific research station as part of a coherent international marine science research programme?

Mr. Mason

That is not a question for me.
