HC Deb 04 December 1967 vol 755 cc946-7
37. Mr. Marten

asked the Attorney-General whether he is satisfied with the adequacy of the protection of the owners of goods on hire or hire purchase under the present law; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

I am not aware of any inadequacy in the protection afforded to the owners of goods on hire or hire purchase under the present law, but if the hon. Gentleman has any particular point in mind, I will gladly see that it is considered.

Mr. Marten

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman aware that local authorities are distraining on tenants in arrears on goods on hire purchase or rented television sets? Rather than wait for the Report of the Payne Committee, which has been sitting since 1965, cannot we have some interim amendment of the law, instead of waiting for perhaps another three years for this Committee's Report?

The Attorney-General

I would be glad to look into the matter the hon. Gentleman raises and also to refer it to my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade, who is primarily responsible for the hire and hire-purchase sphere.
