HC Deb 20 April 1967 vol 745 cc789-90
21. Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what supervision is provided for supervised home-based studies by the Cheshire College of Education.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

Specific assignments for private study are set for the students of the Cheshire College of Education, Alsager, before each home-based period, and the results have to be presented to tutors for assessment by given dates.

Sir J. Langford-Holt

Can the hon. Gentleman assure me that I am wrongly informed that no supervision is taking place? Can he make a statement about the standard of supervision in other colleges of this nature?

Mr. Roberts

The scheme was carefully thought out by the principal and staff of this college, and the University of Keele Institute of Education, which is the organisation concerned with teacher training in the area, approves of the scheme. As to its extension to other colleges, colleges are free to expand their production of teachers by rearranging and adjusting their own courses.
