§ 30. Mr. Bryant Godman Irvineasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of the total revenue is obtained by taxes on inheritance.
§ Mr. MacDermotDeath duties produced 3⅓ per cent. of total tax revenue in 1966–67.
§ Mr. IrvineThe Chancellor only last week was congratulating those who were capable of saving. Would not the hon. and learned Gentleman agree that one of the most important reasons for saving is to provide for one's widow? In those circumstances, should not the Chancellor at least have another look at this particular question?
§ Mr. MacDermotI have no doubt that my right hon. Friend will pay attention to what the hon. Gentleman has said. There are provisions within the existing Estate Duty law to relieve the burden on widows.
