HC Deb 13 April 1967 vol 744 c1351
18. Mr. Alan Williams

asked the Secretary of State for Wales the average cost per mile of roads built in Wales to motorway standards; and the average acreage per mile needed for the construction of these roads.

Mr. Ifor Davies

About £990,000 and 25 acres per mile.

Mr. Williams

Will my hon. Friend bear these costs in mind when considering the 199-mile North to South Wales road which has been proposed by the hon. Member for Carmarthen (Mr. Gwynfor Evans)? Is he aware that if this road were ever constructed to dual carriageway standards, it would absorb approximately five times the amount of land that was flooded at Tryweryn? Does he not agree that in any event it would be so unused in relation to the £82 million cost than if it were ever opened, it could well be opened to the strains of "Sheep may safely graze"?

Mr. Davies

The costs which I have quoted compare reasonably with the cost of roads built to the same standard in similar locations.
