HC Deb 13 April 1967 vol 744 cc1362-3
35. Sir C. Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many convictions for motoring offences there have been during the past 12 months in the Greater London area, and how many convictions for other offences.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Dick Taverne)

In the Metropolitan Police District there were during 1966 211,135 convictions for motor vehicle offences, 6,755 convictions for traffic offences not involving motor vehicles and 143,894 convictions for non-traffic offences.

Sir C. Taylor

Do not those figures rather give the indication that traffic offences are taking up too much of a policeman's life?

Mr. Taverne

They certainly show a high number of traffic offences, which is rising, but whether or not steps can be taken to reduce police involvement with this is one of the points being considered by the Police Advisory Board on the recommendation of the working parties.
