HC Deb 13 April 1967 vol 744 cc1344-5
6. Mr. Ednyfed Hudson Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales when he expects work to start on the improvement of A55 trunk road between Tai'r Meibion and Aber.

Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

I have authorised the Caernarvonshire County Council as my agents to accept the tender of Thyssen (Great Britain) Limited for this improvement at a cost of £212,334 and work should start soon.

Mr. Davies

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this news will be most enthusiastically received in North Wales, where the flow of traffic on the A55 will be much improved? May we have an assurance that there will be further improvement to this important trunk road in future years?

Mr. Hughes

Yes, Sir. Preparations are well advanced for a scheme, estimated to cost more than £1 million, to by-pass St. Asaph's, and constructional work is programmed to start later this year. I have also authorised preparation of a scheme for the diversion of a length of road east of Abergele to Flintshire county boundary with a view to inclusion in the Welsh road programme and a major survey to be carried out in the Colwyn Bay area to determine the best route for a new road there.
