HC Deb 18 October 1966 vol 734 cc5-6
5. Mr. Patrick Jenkin

asked the Minister of Technology what recent contact he has had with senior Ministers and officials connected with Euratom; and what has been the outcome of his latest meeting.

Mr. Benn

On 10th October in London I took the; chair at a meeting of the Continuing Committee which was set up under the United Kingdom/Euratom Agreement for Co-operation. We discussed the existing collaboration and agreed to extend the exchange of information.

Mr. Jenkin

Does not the Minister agree that the time has now come for collaboration in the atomic field to go very much wider? Could not this be the spearhead of a new British initiative to establish a European community for technology?

Mr. Benn

That is a wider question, but it is true that, at the meeting, we agreed that we ought to extend our discussions to include energy policy and also uranium supply; so that, in that sense, collaboration is likely to get stronger.

Sir H. Legge-Bourke

Would the Minister bear in mind that if difficulties arise in dealing with Euratom on this front, there is always the O.E.C.D., which might perhaps do something rather better than Euratom will ever do?

Mr. Benn

Yes, I will bear that in mind.
