§ Mr. Kenneth LewisOn a point of order. On Friday, Mr. Speaker, we had a Private Members' Day and you specially requested that short speeches should be made. I and, no doubt, other hon. Members were not able to speak in that debate in view of the fact that there was a speech by the Government Front Bench spokesman of 35 minutes. I ask you, Mr. Speaker, to protect back-bench Members so that private Members' time is not usurped by the Government.
§ Mr. SpeakerI am afraid that that is not a point of order for the Chair. The Chair does its best to protect backbench Members, and indeed Front Bench Members, from long speeches by hon. and right hon. Members which prevent other Members from speaking in the debate, but it can do so only by exhortation and prayer.
