HC Deb 24 November 1966 vol 736 c1559
Mr. Elystan Morgan

With your permission, Mr. Speaker, and that of the House, I should like to present a Petition which has been signed by nearly 10,000 of my constituents in Cardiganshire. It is a Petition which calls for legislation to be introduced to enable the railway line between Aberystwyth and Carmarthen to be reopened. The Petition shows that this railway, which was closed over two years ago, served a substantial part of the population of East and South Cardiganshire.

The Petitioners assert that the closure had the general effect of severing a vital link of communication between North-West and South-West Wales. Furthermore, it is claimed that it detrimentally affected the economic development of the area, with regard both to industry and to tourism, in addition to diverting to an already inadequate road system the burdens of traffic formerly borne by the railway in question. The Petitioners submit that the reopening of this railway line will reverse the harm suffered and revitalise the areas concerned. It concludes in the customary way: And your Petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.

To lie upon the Table.
