16. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Minister of Technology what representations were received from the Scottish Council by his predecessor on the subject of bio-engineering; and what action is being taken.

Mr. Dell

The Scottish Council suggested that bio-engineering could become a growth industry of interest to my right hon. Friend's Department. The Ministry of Technology is discussing with the Health Departments and the Medical Research Council the possibility of establishing an institute to provide a link between research and technology in this sphere. We and the Health Departments are identifying user needs for discussion with industry.

When is it hoped to get results from this?

These discussions are going forward, but I would not like at this stage to give my hon. Friend a date.
