§ 2. Mr. Blakerasked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs if he will seek consultations with the Governments of Australia and New Zealand 1121 about the continued use by Her Majesty's Government of facilities at the Simons-town naval base.
§ Mr. BowdenNo, Sir.
§ Mr. BlakerWould not the right hon. Gentleman agree that the Governments of Australia and New Zealand have a legitimate interest in our plans for the continued use of the Simonstown base? Is it the intention of the Government that the frigate which we have there and the C.-in-C. be withdrawn? If so, were the Governments of Australia and New Zealand consulted before those decisions were taken?
§ Mr. BowdenI cannot go beyond saying that if any consultation were necessary between Australia and the British Government over the Simonstown base, we would consult. Up to the present moment, it has not been necessary.
