HC Deb 03 November 1966 vol 735 c638
17. Mr. Abse

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what action is being taken to ensure that legal aid is available to enable parents of the children killed at Aberfan to be legally represented if they so wish at the inquiry to be conducted by Lord Justice Edmund Davies.

Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

The Government will meet the reasonable costs involved.

Mr. Abse

Is the Secretary of State satisfied that everybody concerned will be having the legally-aided representation required, particularly people who may not be parents but who have suffered damage or loss? What methods are being adopted to ensure that it is known to all concerned that legal aid is available and how they can obtain access to it?

Mr. Hughes

I understand that parents, dependants and others who have suffered loss as a result of the disaster have gathered together and have agreed upon concerted action in response to the Government's offer. I believe that the matter is proceeding satisfactorily under the guidance of the Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil.
