HC Deb 24 May 1966 vol 729 c274
37. Mr. Wellbeloved

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will make a statement on future plans for the Southern Outfall Sewerage Works, in view of the proposed development of the Woolwich-Erith Marsh site.

Mr. Mellish

Extension of the sewage treatment works is a matter for the Greater London Council. It owns about 700 acres of land which is allocated in the development plan for this purpose. I understand, however, that it is willing to release some of this land for use in connection with the Woolwich-Erith development.

Mr. Wellbeloved

Is my hon. Friend aware that there is a possibility of an extension of the Southern Outfall Sewerage Works and that this is causing very grave concern? Will he use his influence to persuade the Greater London Council not to extend the sewerage works next door to a housing development of this magnitude?

Mr. Mellish

Yes, Sir, and I will call a conference to try to settle these difficulties.
