§ 42. Mr. Buchanasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will make representations to the South African Government on behalf of Mr. Dingake, a Bechuanaland national, kidnapped and brought into South Africa illegally to stand trial.
§ The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Mrs. Eirene White)I would refer to my answer of 2nd May to the hon. Member for Roxburgh, Selkirk and Peebles (Mr. David Steel) to which I have nothing to add.
§ Mr. BuchanWould not my hon. Friend put it to my right hon. Friend that a great number of people in this country are extremely disturbed by this position? 1858 This is a British national kidnapped—apparently in circumstances in Rhodesia over which, if anyone, we are the legal Government now—and being charged with apparent crimes, on charges which many people in this country find abhorrent, namely, his political views? Would she consider putting before my right hon. Friend the attitude of this House and suggesting that representations be made?
§ Mrs. WhiteIf my hon. Friend has studied the Answer I gave earlier this week, he will appreciate that there are some difficulties in this case. It is sub judice and the trial continues tomorrow.
