§ 8. Mr. Abseasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what action is to be taken to compensate Gobine and 1843 Loizeau following upon the recent Seychelles Court of Appeal decision in London quashing their convictions in respect of a murder committed more than 10 years ago; and whether, in making a payment to these men, account will be taken of the fact that both men had fully served their sentences, including many months in a condemned cell.
§ Mr. StonehouseI understand that an application has been made to the Governor of Seychelles for the grant of a free pardon and compensation and this will be considered by him in consultation with his Executive Council.
I will inform the House when I have received the Governor's views.
§ Mr. AbseWill my hon. Friend draw the attention of the Governor to the fact that not only did these men spend many months in the condemned cell with the sentence of death over them for a long period and serve out their ultimate sentences, but for nearly five years have been fighting for their innocence, and that this agony of mind of theirs should be taken into account in any compensation paid?
§ Mr. StonehouseI will certainly convey those observations.
