HC Deb 05 May 1966 vol 727 cc1838-9
4. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy towards the wish of Barbados for independence, indicating whether the proposed conference has yet been held, and with what result.

Mr. Frederick Lee

The Barbados Government have accepted my predecessor's invitation to a Conference in London opening on 20th June to discuss the Barbados Government's request for early independence within the Commonwealth.

Mr. Hughes

Does my right hon. Friend realise that the express wish of the Barbados Government is democratic and that it would be for the benefit of the British Commonwealth of Nations that it should be acceded to? Will he take steps to see that it is?

Mr. Lee

Yes, of course. That is precisely what the conference is about.
