HC Deb 05 May 1966 vol 727 c1843
9. Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a statement about the Windward Islands Constitutional Conference.

Mr. Frederick Lee

The Conference has not yet ended. As its proceedings are confidential, I am unable to make a statement at this moment.

Mr. Fisher

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that we welcome these new constitutional proposals and hope that they will be acceptable to the Windward Islands? However, can he give an assurance that the change in constitutional status which this will imply will not in any way worsen the trading relations of the Windwards with this country, particularly for the banana industry which is vital to their economy?

Mr. Lee

Yes. I can give the assurance that nothing within the new constitution would prejudice their position.
