§ 31. Mr. Wellbelovedasked the Minister of Transport if she is satisfied that the proposals submitted by London Transport to her for capital sanction to deal with the extra requirement for public transport that will result from the development of the Woolwich-Erith marsh area for the housing of 60,000 people are adequate; and if she will make a statement.
§ Mr. SwinglerThe Board has not yet submitted proposals for investment specifically related to this development. But my right hon. Friend is satisfied that the machinery which has been devised to bring together all concerned with this scheme, is well suited to deal with its consequences for public transport.
§ Mr. WellbelovedIs my hon. Friend aware that that will bring no satisfaction to my constituents, who live in an area 1771 where the transport facilities are quite inadequate at the moment? With 60,000 new families going into this estate, would he impress on the right hon. Lady the urgent need for getting some positive proposals on the drawing board?
§ Mr. SwinglerIt is quite obvious that big improvements will have to be made here, but the Greater London Council is primarily responsible for this scheme. As my hon. Friend knows, it is being managed at the moment by a working party on which all the Government Departments, councils and operators concerned are represented. We are now awaiting the proposals to my right hon. Friend about the necessary improvements.
