HC Deb 28 June 1966 vol 730 c1575
33. Mr. van Straubenzee

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the Government's special responsibility for the decision that the Sperry Gyroscope Company Limited's factory at Bracknell should expand, he will give instructions to the district valuer of the Inland Revenue at Maidenhead that special consideration shall be shown to those affected by the compulsory purchase orders made necessary by the decision.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Niall MacDermot)

The district valuer will deal with claims as quickly as possible.

Mr. van Straubenzee

Does the Financial Secretary not appreciate that the Question does not deal with speed and that this situation arises directly from a Government decision? A large number of those involved are very old, and this is a case, in the name of humanity, for special consideration to reflect the speed with which people have to move.

Mr. MacDermot

If the hon. Gentleman does not mean speed by "special consideration" I do not follow what he means. If he suggests that they should be paid especially favourable compensation, I think that that is an improper suggestion. The compensation must follow the formula laid down by law.
